George Washington

Thomas Jefferson

On Feb. 17, 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected the third president of the United States. The election constituted the first peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another in the United States.

Students will identify Thomas Jefferson’s role in revolutionary America by examining the phrase “all men are created equal” in this video lesson for grades 3-5.
