While Diwali is most commonly celebrated within the Hindu tradition, did you know that it’s actually a multi-faith holiday also observed in the traditions of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism?

In the Hindu tradition, Diwali is the celebration of the story of Prince Rama, who after years of exile from his home city, defeated an evil king and returned home – a story of the victory of good over evil, or light over darkness.

In the Jainist tradition, Diwali is the celebration of the achievement of nirvana by Mahavira, one of the most influential spiritual leaders in Jainism.

In the Buddhist tradition, Diwali is the celebration of the conversion to Buddhism by the Mauryan Emperor Asoka.

And finally, in the Sikh tradition, Diwali celebrates the 17th-century release from prison of Guru Hargobind, an important spiritual teacher in Sikhism.
